I've been going to WW every yr since I was very little and my family and I would go to Schumann's every morning for breakfast because it was one of the few good restaurants in the Crest and was very affordable. I would always order their "Captain's Catch" I think it was 2 pancakes, 2 bacons, 2 eggs, and hash browns. I think it was only $4 recently, it was a good deal.
Well, I was down there from about 1990-2002. I'm only 16 so I've been there every year since I was a toddler so i don't remember much of that place, I don't know much of its history.
Every morning, My family and I would get up real early and walk the "trail" to Schumann's. From the Nassau, we'd walk about 4 blocks to the place. First we'd walk straight to Cape Cod Inn and make a right onto Atlantic Ave. Then we'd walk straight down Atlantic, past Higbee Field, down the memorial path and cross I think Aster Rd. We'd walk by the Late and Great Satellite Motel and I do remember seeing the boomerang roof. After that we'd walk straight into the place and get a table immediately. Since everyone there knew my family, we got a table right away. I always liked sitting in the little section off to the side because they had booths and you could see the side of the Satellite from the side and if you looked a little bit up, you could see the sign.
Sadly, I returned in 03/04 and driving down Atl. Ave, I saw this bland looking building stood in the place of the restaurant right next to the Satellite. I thought my eyes were deceiving me but as my family arrived at the Nassau, we walked into the rental management office and the owner of the building told us that Schumanns was gone.
As I got into my unit, the first thing I did was check the phone book and I couldn't find the name Hudson's. Then I thought maybe the name changed back to Schumanns. I couldn't find it either.
I put down the book and the first thing I did was cry really hard, and for a long time too. It was so sad because the place was gone and without warning. It made my stomach wrench and I thought I was going to be sick. It was the first time I cried in WW ever because I'm always so happy there. All I know is that from now on, my vacation will never be the same.
