Playland....especially the carousel. What a treat it was to be rewarded with a ride or two, for having behaved at dinner.

Remembering the Starlight ballroom and all the great dances..then the frozen banana stand where you walked to the entrance. Fun pier was the old convention hall...where my brothers and I got our introduction to wrestling...where has the time gone...

This site, and others like it, have been a godsend to me. I have been going to Wildwood and the Crest for my entire life. I was literally conceived there in 1972 ;D.
My parents, my brother, and I, went every summer from the mid 70s until the mid 80s. My father got skin cancer back in 1986 (luckily he survived), so we stopped going for several years. I returned during college in the mid 90s on a couple of occasions. My wife and I have gone few times as well now in the 2000s.
Last summer, we went back along with my family. It was terrible sight for me to see the Captain's Table had vanished. My Grandfather ate there many, many years ago. I miss him as well.
I think a thing that rings true throughout this site is the "feeling" that everyone enjoys while visiting the Wildwoods. I believe these emotions are so strong, because so many of us spent our summer vacations there ... with our families ... our friends ... and our loved ones.
I always noticed that my family was at its happiest in the Wildwoods. Maybe a lot of people feel the same way? New Jersey and the New York "metropolitan" area has surely changed dramatically in the past ten to fifteen years. Who can afford it anymore?
We all work too hard. We all have houses that are too expensive. Too much stress. Not enough life.
Everyone likes Wildwood so much because it was full of life, character, sunshine, neon lights, and the charm of the old days.
This upcoming summer vacation might be my last at the Crest and on the boards. My wife and I are probably moving to somewhere more affordable. I will always miss Hunt's, the arcade games of the early 80s, my father's reckless abandon in the waves, riding boogey boards with my brother, and my mother's smile in the sand.
Hopefully, people will do their best to take care of the area. If not, we will always have the memories.

I always noticed that my family was at its happiest in the Wildwoods. I don't know about the family, but I know I was. I hear ya. I've been in NYC since 1974 and I'm just about living in a straitjacket at this point, expensewise. I think change has snuck up and clobbered a lot of people around here. I hope this summer won't mark your last visit--the Wildwoods needs all of its true friends. I hope you won't find it necessary to move too far away, and will be able to use some of what you save by moving to keep your Wildwood tradition alive. I'd like to see us preserve a little more than just our memories, but it's an uphill fight... Enjoy your visit--and take pictures of everything that's connected to your memories and sentiments about the Wildwoods. Not just because it may be gone next summer, though that's highly likely, but because God is in the details, as they say. In the dead of winter you'll be looking at your Wildwoods photos and some little thing will unleash a torrent of warm-and-fuzziness just when you need it most

I would bring back the care-free life as a child in the 50's and 60's when my family went to Wildwood every year. It seemes the trip there would never end, but then all of a sudden you start smelling that "ocean air" and you got all excited! We used to stay in old motels and all of us slept in one room. And believe it or not; everyone "shared" the bathroom down the hall! But did we care? Not a bit. We just couldn't wait to get to the beach! Imagine staying there like that today? Those are memories I will never forget.

Amen! We're all so spoiled today. I remember as a teen going down with just a few bucks and spending just a few dollars a nite at rooming houses with shared bathrooms. The folks who owned them were so great. It was worth it just to be in WW. All we needed was a place to lay our heads at night. Don't know if my kids would do that today.

Well, I have to be honest, Crippled, the answer would be no! The kids today are too spoiled and I'll admit, I am, too. But back then, if you never had it to miss, well, you didn't know what you were missing. : )

Speaking of "bathrooms down the hall", did you ever stay at The Doris Vernon or The Idlewhile? These were places we grew up with in the 60s & 70s. We were a little envious of my uncles family who always stayed across the street at The Flamingo with their "air conditioned rooms and color TVs", but you know what, we didn't really care because we were in Wildwood. I know it wouldn't be as popular today, but the difference in price really did make it possible to have a vacation even when money was tight. You could pull it off if you have little ones who haven't already been spoiled by modern motels at the shore, or for teens who don't have a lot to spend on a room but want to enjoy the beach for a couple of days. There were quite a few times in the past when a group of my friends would just decide on a Friday afternoon to spend the weekend at WW. We would just load up and head out and we would always be able to get a couple of cheap rooms and have a fun weekend. We were usually down to our last dollars by the time it was over. I mean there were times when we had to pool our money for the bridge tolls.... Anyone else???

I wish my great grandmother's boarding house on Glenwood Avenue, The Morans, was still around.

Oh, yes, I did that plenty of times. Spent all we had and were counting change for the way back. Nothing planned; just go!! Boy, if only I could do that today. They still have some of those older places, don't they? We stayed in a place a couple years ago and the air-conditioner wasn't working right. Went right over to the office to complain. Yes, we ALL are a little spoiled. I try not to talk about how hot it is here; especially when my daughter is in Iraq with 120 degree dry heat. Don't you think some of these motels are a little "out of hand" with their prices? What is the average price for a night there?

When I was a kid in the 60's. we packed up the 65 galaxie and headed to wildwood. No plans, no motel. I remember stopping at hotels with my dad going in getting prices and brochures and coming back to the car to make a decision on whether we were gonna stay there. I also remember driving around and around when there were no rooms available... That was before the internet where we just plan our whole vacatin via the web lol.. Thank thats bad?? My wifes grandparents used to go to ww with the packed up car and head to a realitor and PAY them to find them a hotel!
