I own many postcards of WW past. I mean I have cards from the early thirties thru today. I find it interesting to see WW the way it once looked. Does anyone else have these old cards? Does anyone have info on the places like Mount's Restaurant, Tauber's Restaurant, it boasted a sign "good food" it's location was across from the ballroom, X-ray poker (what was that??), Funchase Pier with a roller skating rink this building had beautiful architecture by the way, one card shows Convention Hall which was huge on the beach at night and the fun part is that people were in their bathing suits still on the beach, an upclass Hotel Seville in another with very wealthy vehicles parked all around, wonder where that was? A Hospital on the beach, how innovative, Morton's near the old "Playland", and the Original Roast Beef and Dutch Stand across from Playland. If you look and study these cards WW has changed drastically since. So, now WW is in the state of change again. However, with appreciation of these changes I think WW will survive. We need to see that it still will exist beyond our time just like the postcards which still do. As I read thru our posts, sometimes I'm happy, other times sad, but thru it all the love of the island is ours and one of my wishes for this year was that WW will still be there for us and those to come. I'm feeling sentimental today...

Wildwanderer, I agree with you in most respects. One issue that plagues me though is cost. It seems as t hough with the new construction comes new prices for everything. The cost of vacationing in Wildwood is becoming astronomical. I'm just thankful that my family members own summer homes in and around Wildwood. If not for them, I wouldn't be able to visit Wildwood all summer as I do. You're very right. Wildwood will still be here. It's not going to go anywhere. Its managed to change drastically over the years and still survive, as it will this time. The issue I'm seeing here though again, is one of money. Will the normal working class American family be able to still afford vacationing in the havan that they love?

I have a few old postcards - Hunt's Pier and Casa Bahama are 2 of my newest acquisitions.
It is a nice way to commemorate the island and an inexpensive hobby. I am always on ebay looking for cards.

I agree the regular joe who goes to WW will have a difficult time. I don't know why but it feels like they want to shut out a class of people from the island. We come to WW for weekends for the summer. We also have a place to stay right outside WW. It still has a WW address. So, we won't be affected at all by this. But, friends and family of mine who try to go to the shore already are talking about going somewhere else. Most of them find their way to Delaware or Maryland.

Yep, it seems they are marketing WW to the yuppies now. Anything and everything will be knocked down to build condos the way things are going. In five more years it will be Condowood.

It seems anything and everything "Wildwood" is disappearing from Wildwood. The current political leaders seem to be marketing to a kind of people most of us are not. It hurts.

Postcards are a great way to hang on to the past. I particularly like mailed ones with happy little vacation notes written on them. I own over 300 motel postcards of wildwood alone, all from the 30's to 70's. Nothing is a better "mood fixer" than browsing through my collection. I'm so glad I have them since so many of those motels are long gone now.

The only thing of WW that will be left behind is the sand.

What direction do they want WW to become? Do they want it to still be "wild", or do they want it to become more "relaxing" for the upper class people? You know, higher class yuppies love quiet, relaxing places like LBI or Hilton Head, or Outer Banks, Avalon, Stone Harbor, etc. Any place without noise and amusement parks and sleazy t-shirt shops and bars. Will the influx of higher income people to WW "kill" the "wild" in Wildwood? Build more upscale restaurants (tablecloth & wine) as the old ones vanish? Get rid of the boardwalk sleaze shops and build fine stores instead?

Get rid of the boardwalk sleaze shops and build fine stores instead? No offense to you Robert or anyone else in particular, but I wonder who do you mean when you say what direction do "THEY" want Wildwood to become...." Just who are THEY? Do you have names for they? Is there someone - one individual or group of people - that you blame for the direction the Wildwoods are going? Is there someone who actually sat down and made a decision, "Gee, I really like outrageously expensive condos, I think I'll change the Wildwoods. Is there a group of people who planned to have all this happen at once? What's happening in the Wildwoods is happening to one extent or another in almost every seashore community in the nation probably. This is just an economic period in the history when condos at the shore are becoming very popular. 20 years from now, if the ocean doesn't rise too far and drown the Wildwoods, it will probably be some other fad - like domed houses or maybe even a rebirth of smaller hotels. Times change and individual human beings can not change them, all they can do is try to influence the direction of the trend to the best of their abilities. The problem here is that it is happening quicker than in most other communities but it is happening everywhere. I said this in the "Rant" thread: The number 1 reason for what is happening in the Wildwoods is that there are 4 governments and 4 planning boards and 4 zoning boards making 12 different sets of decisions on the direction of their individual little kingdoms with no overall coordinating leader. And what they do NOT seem to realize yet is that what one does effects all the others equally.Unless and until there is only one government and one planning board making decisions for one Wildwoods, nothing will change. There is no "THEY." No one is in charge. Thom

I am under the impression that Robert, et al meant "they" as those who are taking the surveys and planning to market to the more affluent areas. (This was discussed in length in another thread.)

I meant they in the powers that be, the people in charge of development and planning. I hope WW doesn't turn into another "boring" shore town like LBI, etc. My aunt and uncle and family used to go to WW until the mid-80's, then switched to LBI. To me, LBI would be boring because there are no amusement parks, just beach and summer homes. I like "excitement" when I go on vacation. To me that is amusement parks and "fun" things to do. Especially scary dark rides. I also am a big train fan, especially old steam trains, and I miss Hunt's train terribly. It was unique with the ghost town.

Robert: Question: Why did you go to the WW's until the mid-80's and switch to such a boring LBI? Why?? Why are you so concerned about WW when you haven't set foot on it for 20 years??? Why do you even care? Should I go on,...
