all good stuff!
one question. For those who take the 55 to 47 route how many stay on 47 and how many take the alternate 347 route for the trip thru the pines??? We used to take the 347 but the last few years take the 47 way (which looks longer on maps but usually has less traffic) The 47 way is past leesburg prison....

How could I forget Olga's? Shame on me.
There is another motel, I think it is in Berlin on Rt 73. It had a blue mirrored trim, that was in recent years painted over. I always thought it had a WW feel to it.
Anyone remember on 73, around Olga's, there was a small glass building? It had a high triangular roof. It may have been an office for a motel. This is going back many years.
To Al - yes, the first Muffler Man that I mentioned is (was) the one right over the Tacony Bridge. Each year, he would lose another extremity. At first, it was a finger or two, then he lost an arm up to the elbow. Then, he was gone.

We used to have a nickname for it, but I can't remember what it was. I do recall seeing him quite a bit, even in the winter months, as we would make trips to the Cherry Hill, Morrestown and Echelon malls. I can still picture him now, standing at the base of the auto mall with no arms, beaming with this big, creepy smile. I'm sure it was left there as something of a joke, but you just don't really see oddities like that much anymore. Great memory, though! As for the other motel you mentioned on 73 in (or near) Berlin and the glass building near Olga's, both of them sound familiar. I'll have to search my memory banks a bit and ask a relative or two if these ring a bell...

More fun on Rt. 73...
Because I have absolutely nothing else to do here at work today (OK, so that's not exactly true), I'm sitting here trying to make a mental inventory of all the interesting landmarks you see along 73, after crossing the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge into Jersey.
* Roger Wilco -- There's a couple of these along 73, but the one I always remember is right across the bridge, next to the McDonalds. Has a weirdly-shaped roadside sign, and an odd, bubble-style roof. And, who can forget the logo, with the mustacheod pilot, looking (perhaps fittingly) half crocked?
* The Woodbine -- Legendary bar and nightclub in Pennsauken. I believe it either sat vacant or operated as something else for a few years there, but it is back in full force as the "New" Woodbine. This place is huge!
* Jay's Elbow Room -- Very small, but really cool looking bar with a very "Wildwood" flavor to it. Has a cool sign, complete with several 50s elements, like leaning angles and starbursts. I've gotta get inside this place some day.
* Laurel Lanes Bowling Alley -- Right across from Jay's, this place received a major makeover last year. It is now done up sort of in the style of an old Art Deco movie house, with a very colorful exterior. Definitely a pretty old place, probably built during the country's "bowling boom" in the 50s.
* Bel-Air Motor Lodge -- This motel, located just past Jay's Elbow Room, always reminds of Wildwood, for obvious reasons. Neat, 50s-style sign, with a large boomerang design.
* Track & Turf Motel -- Small and simple, but neat-looking motel in Mt. Laurel, just past Maple Shade border. We've always liked the stone wall-style sign and the little lantern guy out front. "We've got HBO!" (In the 80s, it probably said "We've got Prism!")
* Big water tower in Mt. Laurel -- One of the biggest landmarks you'll see on the way to the shore, this received a MUCH NEEDED paint job a few years back. One of the last Cumberland Farms stores in the area is nearby (I'm pretty sure it has a different name now, though).
* Chazz Restaurant -- Once a very hopping restaurant/nightclub, this is located at Fellowship Rd., right in front of the Bob Evans Restaurant. The Chazz closed literally decades ago, and for a long time was covered in overgrown shrubbery. The grass was cut a few years back, making it look like something was being done with the site. But, it continues to sit, neglected and vacant.

My drive is a bit different. I-95N to 64W through Suffolk, Norfolk and finally the beautiful Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, then it's 113,up the eastern shores of Va,Tammy and Johnny's Burgers(lunch), Maryland then finally Delaware. All the sleepy tiny towns that dot the landscape, not a traffic circle to be seen....anywhere. At last the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. The absolute best is finally getting on the NJ side of the Delaware. Driving over the bridge to Diamond Beach with Wildwood Days blaring over the stereo. Ah.......I've arrived........I'm home!

The El Dorado on Route 47 is a true dive. I wonder how that place actually stays in business. The screened in room in the front of the motel looks like a real treat. We also notice the Port of Call restuarant on Route 47. It is funny because it has a Port o Potty next to the restuarant. Another landmark on 47 is the Tuckahoe Inn. I love to Tuck A Ho in. I didn't realize there was another Tuckahoe Inn... the only one I know of is located on Rt. 9; right before the Beesley's Point Bridge (which is closed now). You can also see the restaurant from the GSP Bridge too. You're right Huntspier. I think we would just see a sign for the Inn along 47....not the actual Inn.

News note to all: One of the last things anyone sees before they feel the cool air of the Wildwoods has just bit the dust. If you enter the Wildwoods through Rio Grande, the OLD Wawa on the southeast corner of 9 and 47 (next to Duncan Donuts) has just been demolished. As of today. Most everyone thought the old Wawa would just be sold to a Doctor or a real estate agency like all the others that were replaced by the new Super Wawas with gas pumps. But apparently, no one wanted the old building. I don't know what they intend to put in there yet, but that corner has been a favorite for lots of people. Before the old Wawa there was a tiny barber shop there, but what most of us remember more fondly was the famous 4 G's Restaurant that was there before the Wawa. (Best raviolis in CMC). Thom I heard an auto parts store was going in there. It wasn't a reliable source, so I guess time will tell.

Thom I heard an auto parts store was going in there. It wasn't a reliable source, so I guess time will tell. If it is , it would be a totally new building. There are already two major auto parts stores in Rio: Eastern Auto by Shoprite and the newer one across the street from Rio Station that I can never remember the name of, even though I go in there all the time. I don't know why anyone would put a third auto parts store within walking distance of the same intersection, unless Eastern is planning on moving away from Shoprite to get closer to the main intersection. Either way, I'm stumped on what's going in there next. Thom p.s. My memory just kicked in. The store across from Rio Station is called Advanced Auto Parts.

My trip is a lot more like yours -- we are in Richmond, Va -- so we go up I-95, through DC, into Maryland, Delaware -- hop on the Ferry (the kids' favorite part!) and then drive into Wildwood through Cape May.
And we have a CD that my hubby made of all kinds of Wildwood/oldies/beach music that we listen to from the time we get off the Ferry until we pull into the motel --
I can hardly wait for vacation this year!
