Mike, I think the Muffler Man was holding a tire. At least, he was until he lost his arms.

Cindy and Mike,
I believe you guys are right about the Pennsauken Muffler Man holding a tire way back in the day.
My memory is very, very foggy, as I also seem to remember him holding an axe or something, but I think that's just because my parents always referred to him as "Paul Bunyan."
(The term "Muffler Man" would not enter into my vernacular for many, many years to come.)

I found the following exceprt on www.roadsideamerica.com (a great site, by the way)... Pennsauken, New Jersey - Big Man with a Tire in His Hand - Vague Recollections Growing up, my family often crossed the "Double Nickle Bridge" (aka Tacony-Palmyra Bridge) to travel from our home in Northeast Philadelphia to the many delights of New Jersey, such as the Jersey Shore, the Pennsaukin Mart indoor flea market (!), and cheap gas. A few moments after crossing the bridge, the "Big Man with the Tire in His Hand" would come into view on the driver's side of my dad's battered green station wagon. The Big Man (who was also honored with several songs we kids sang for him over the years--try rhyming his name and the song lyrics just flow) fell into a bit of disrepair some time ago and I seem to recall him actually losing his hands (and his tire). Guess he got tired of holding the darn thing. [Di, 07/29/2002] (Big Man with a Tire in His Hand - Vague Recollections: Pennsauken, NJ Directions: Take the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge from Philadelphia. Once over, continue on NJ 73 South for approximately 5 minutes. The BMWATIHH will be on your left.)

Al, you have a lot of "free time" at work, just like me. ;D Great website - Mr. Bill is on there, as well.
At work, the systems were down yesterday and I made a spreadsheet of all the current WW motels, complete with the addresses. I have a tab for the "lost treasures", too. Plus, I booked a weekend at the Carribean for their grand re-opening!

Thom I heard an auto parts store was going in there. It wasn't a reliable source, so I guess time will tell. Follow-up: Today, I took a photo of the Wawa demolition in Rio Grande for the Wildwood Leader and called the Middle Twp Zoning Board to find out what's replacing it. Your source was right, it's going to become an "Auto Zone." Thom

How about that ancient cemetery in middle of 347? We're talking early so. NJ here....like Ben Franklin era. Also that old white house behind the big horse pasture just north of the El Dorado. Good photo-ops both of these. Very Weird NJ. I always wondered about that cemetary. Kind of creepy in the middle of the woods. Also, don't forget the "Jersey Devil". That idea combined with the old tombstones get your heart racing...

Haven't seen anyone mention the Rodeo or the giant cowboy we see on the way down. I'm not sure if it's on 47 or 55. One of these days I would like to come down early and stop over for one of the weekly rodeos.

You will see him if you are passing Richman's Ice Cream and going towards (or coming from) the Delaware Memorial Bridge, I-95, etc. Here's a link to their website: www.cowtownrodeo.com/

I live about a mile from the very end of 55. 3 minutes away from the wawa on 47 and 347. When we were teens we always raced down 347 to see who would make it first to rio grande.Boy those were the days. Now we take 47 all the way. Once i hit Rio grande ave then i kno i'm there and vacation has started for me! The old El Dorado motel always has reminded me of Norman Bait's motel in Psyco! How bout the traffic, i have only hit traffic 4 times my hole life. You have to know what time to beat that traffic.I've talked to people who have drove from all over the USA and said the traffic to wildwood is killer.I've said if you can make it to the end of 55 buy 11 am then you will be ok,after that your in trouble.
