From the 98.7 Coast website
3/24/05 - Let Hotels Get Higher, Says Wildwood City Commission -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Wildwood city commission met Wednesday afternoon and approved a brand new ordinance that will allow buildings to go as high as 250 feet in the resort. The city believes this move will allow new high rise condo/hotel buildings to be built in town, adding much needed hotel rooms for tourism, and to accomodate the new convention hall.
Now, 25 story hotels are a conforming use in Wildwood. This comes right before the city's zoning board will vote on a new project at the site of the Binns and the Bonita motels that will be about 25 stories high.
Mayor Ernie Troiano told us this week higher buildings are needed since the Wildwoods have a shortage of lodging units, thanks to all of the motels being knocked down.

Look for this hotel to be another "Neo Doo Wop" inspired building...
Stay tuned to the DWPL website... we'll be posting some new renderings soon of some of the current and future proposed Doo Wop projects planned for the Wildwoods...

Now, this is progress.
I hate to see any of the old motels go, but, in the cases of the Binns and Bonito Motels, I feel that they will be "sacrificed" for the greater good.
The next few years will be a very exciting time in the Wildwoods. This past offseason was difficult to swallow, with the demolition of so much of the island's past, so many architectural gems of the mid-century era.
But, the emerging trend of the Doo Wop-inspired highrise condotels is a promising sign for the future growth of the resort. These buildings will transform the island for the better. I can't wait to see how they look.
In the wake of the recent condo boom, "Doo Wop" has been in dire need of a catalyst. It may have finally found one.

WOW...that is great news.
Looks like DWPL continues to make inroads.
Agree Al, both of these motels will be sacrificed for a greater good, neither, as I recall, DooWop in current design.
Mike, could you alert us here on the bb when new items are posted on your main pages, don't want to miss anything.
Thanks,

Anybody know what is up with these 2 properties? Did the developer send in a new set of drawings for a smaller high rise?

This is the last I've heard.
From 98.7 the Coast 9/27/05 - Wildwood Mayor: Maybe Waypoint Beach Club Will Scale Down --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WCZT/WILW talked with Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano today, and Troiano says that it's possible the developers of the Waypoint Beach Club will come back to the city with a scaled down version of the big complex. The city's zoning board voted 4-3 in favor of the 23-story building that would be constructed on Atlantic Avenue in the city; however, the measure needed 5 votes to get approved.
Troiano says he thinks the developers may come back with a scaled down version of the plan in order to get it built. The Waypoint Beach Club was supposed to be constructed on Atlantic Avenue, between Spicer and Spencer Avenues.

Sounds like it might make one more season if they do not get some new plans drawn up soon. We stayed at the Bonito 2 years ago---it was in need of work. But I also know that that area is very tight and there we issues that parking would be a major problem.

Looks like the binns and bonito are going strong. The binns was open this week and there are no signs of demo yet. I think the plans are being set back! I didnt see the right kind of people hanging around the binns this week. Maybe it will be better if they do close?

I didnt see the right kind of people hanging around the binns this week. Maybe it will be better if they do close? The manager of the Binns told me the other day that the two motels will be open all through the winter and, most likely, next summer as well. He said he wasn't really sure what was up with the proposed highrise deal, but figured it will go through sooner or later. I know what you mean, crazy, when you talk about the shady characters that float around that area of town. The Binns and Bonito have definitely not been very well taken care of in recent years, and they are not good representations of the way classic Doo Wop motels should be run. Even so, I'm eventually going to miss the large, dual BINNS signs that sit atop the north and south portions of the motel, and are visible from blocks away on Atlantic Ave. The Binns itself is quite unremarkable, but, for some reason, has always served as a prime Wildwood landmark for me.

We stayed at the Bonito 2 years ago. I had gotten their information through the Chamber of Commerce that they were "pet friendly." I made reservations and even made sure they had a small refrig because our dog is diabetic and we needed to keep insulin in the refrig. We show up and the girl says---"sorry we do not take pets!" They let us stay there because I had the name of the person who took the reservation and a copy of my deposit letter stating we had our dog coming. The place was in need of work and I can't see it becoming any better with the "high rise" hanging in the shadows for the future!

I think the (surf 16?) at 16th & Surf advertises it takes pets (if its still standing!). The New England did, they are going. The Castaways used to advertise such, but didn't see the pet sign anymore. The pets are losing out as well....too much condo concrete. Usual developer predicament with the Binns & Bonito. We can see him (who has bought up a lot of land in town) chuckling....well, if they don't want the hi-rise they can keep looking at all this upscale clientele!

Yep, it's not just the loss of an abundance of classic architecture, it's flat-out CRUELTY TO ANIMALS!

Exactly Al----it was very insulting because our dogs are certified therapy dogs and work with special needs pre-school children. The dog is better behaved than most of the vacationers at the hotel that weekend. Sadly there are very few "pet friendly" hotels left.

The Surf 16 Motel is very dog friendly, they even have their own doggie park. I'm not sure they have fridges in every room. I think some of the problem is the island isn't really dog friendly. They aren't allowed on the beaches or the boardwalk during the season, hence not much fun for the animal. Here's a link to dog friendly hotels/motels. www.dogfriendly.com/
