Now, as for the Wildwood Beach Hotel itself, I too have heard that this new entity will replace more than just the Oceanic. Thus, I am assuming that the rendering they have released (the one Thom posted above) will be updated. Reason being, you can clearly see the eastern end of the Days Inn immediately to the lower left of the proposed hotel in the rendering. Lastly, just as a random aside, does anyone know what the Days Inn was before it became the Days Inn? The building is an original from the 60s, though I'm not sure when the chain took over from the original owners. Al - Don't take this photo completely as gospel; it's the only one they released and it was released BEFORE they aquired the rest of the block. I'm assuming the final version will look like this only it will take up the entire block, replacing the Cork and Bottle and the Days Inn. Sorry I can't remember what the Days Inn was before this. Thom Yeah, I wasn't sure whether or not the Days Inn would be included in the Wildwood Beach plans or not, as I've heard conflicting reports. Thanks for clearing this up!

Now, I've got an old postcard of the Cabana Motor Inn around here somewhere; I'll scan it and post the pic as soon as I track it down. Doesn't look much different than the Days Inn does today, to tell you the truth.

thanks for all the info. Yes, it looks like the Days Inn will have to go as well. I have not heard anything since last summer, so was just curious. And yes, the owners have done a great job with the upkeep, of the Oceanic, although I miss the hole in the ceiling! Please, do tell us more about said hole. I'm intrigued... ;D

It's the letters that have been gone for years, the ones that said HUNT'S PIER in red, and Skyline in cursive, and GOLF in green. Those letters are in storage between Rio Grande and Cape May exposed to the elements at Hunt's old maintanence/storage facility by a school. There's a bunch of parts there from Hunt's Pier rides that were dismantled. It's the pylon that is being removed. The pic on ths site that Thom took shows the skeleton frame of it. For the past several years it was just pained white, and during the Dino Beach years "DINOSAUR beach" was painted on it. Not sure when the Hunt's Pier letters were removed, early 90's? I wasn't at WW between 86-94. I was there prior to 86, and between 95-98 exculding 97. So, I wasn't there when the Kamikaze was there, or the walk-through haunted house on Hunt's Pier, or since the Castle Dracula fire or the theater and motel demolitions. The last time I was there every motel was intact, both theater buildings were there near Nickels, the castle was standing and operating, the Nugget was operating. That year was June 98. I haven't been back since then. I think I ate in the Surfside Restaurant and Schumann's. And saw the Satellite Motel, Casa Bahama, Three Coins, 24th St., Packard, Captain's Table, and so on. All gone now. Remember, an SUV in every garage. Oh, yeah, did I mention that I actually was in Ed Zaberer's and ate there in the early 80's? So many rooms. And the Tiffany lamps. I remember the small game room with Pac-Man. So much history in the trash. I remember Zaberer's had a room the had barber chairs in it. That place was crazy! How many kids a night do you think would cry because they got lost in there and couldn't fine their parents?

Zaberer's was amazing... it seemed much bigger when you were inside than it looked from the outside. It's hard to describe -- Just an interlocking labyrinth of rooms, all totally unique, with individual names and all sorts of ambiance.
I remember the many Tiffany lamps the most. There were so many, and they were so colorful and beautifully designed. They seemed to tie the whole place together.
When I was in first grade (I was 6 in 1984), my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I said "Ed Zaberer."
I just thought his place was so cool, like a big kid's fantasyland come to life, but always with a real elegant class to it.
I remember looking at pictures of Mr. Zaberer on one of the walls, posing with various Hollywood bigshots, President Reagan and some sports stars. He seemed like such a big deal.
Then, one night, while my family was dining in one of the lavish rooms, Mr. Zaberer himself burst in, and the whole place just stopped. I swear, a mini-mob accompanied the man, and I remember him standing there, laughing and joking with some other "important-looking" people, his hands tucked into his suit-pants pockets.
He even came over and tassled my hair, which just about made me feel like I was on Cloud 9.
Mr. Zaberer was just one of those guys who gave off such a radiant aura... made him seem almost larger than life to me at the time, as ridiculous as that might sound.
It's funny how much you can remember and the emotion that we attach to places that were, really, so fleeting in terms of the time we got to actually enjoy them.

What ever happened to Mr. Zaberer?

My only visit to Zaberers was with my Wildwood Cub Scout pack in the late 50's/ early 60's. I don't remember much about that one visit except that it was really large and fancy. I had more memories of Valentinos Restaurant (the Hof Brau Club) at oak and Atlantic Avenues. I was a busboy there when I was 14 or 15. Valantinos was like a mini Zaberers: just as fancy and ornate but just a little bit smaller. The thing I remember here was learning how to curse in Spanish from all the Puerto Rican dish washers. I still remember all the words they tought me to this day. ;D Thom Speaking of Zaberers. Here's a photo I picked up today from the Wildwood Historical Society. It's of CHARLIE ZABERERS Original Dog House (hot dog stand) at 2820 bdwk (corner of Magnolia Ave.) from 1941. Hope you like it.

Ed died just a few years ago, think he lived in Florida. He was truly "the host of the Coast" Anyone remember the huge oversized chair? My son got his head stuck in the back rungs, he was so embrassed. Thanks Thom, before my time, LOL Always wondered what it looked like. re

I definitely remember the big chair at Zaberer's, re!
Had many a picture taken on that thing with my little brother and cousins.
How old was your son when he got his head stuck? That must've been terrible...
And, Thom, thanks for posting the old Zaberer's Dog House pic.
"Oh Master, Buy Me One." ;D
LOL. That's great.

Oak and Atlantic. Is this where the bolero is now? Or the beech terrace?

Oak and Atlantic. Is this where the bolero is now? Or the beech terrace? Both are/were at Oak and Atlantic. The Bolero is at the NW corner of Oak and Valentinos/Hof Brau/Beach Terrace are/were at the SW corner. BTW, the famous Riptide Club was on Oak, directly across from Valentinos and next door to the Bolero. Boy, that club featured the greatest entertainers. Thom TheWildwoodsReporter.com
