I just came back from city hall meetings today and there is a lot of news coming out, some of it will be covered in detail in the upcoming week. But I'll just list the highlights here so you'll be the first to know:
1) The Mayor of Wildwood said Rio Grande Avenue is supposed to reopen tomorrow (Thursday). I don't know what shape it will be in. Although I have to see it tomorrow, I seem to remember him saying a while back that the city would take care of the critical infrastructure repairs now and cover it up temporarily until they can finish the rest of the repairs after the season. They didn't want to cause too many traffic problems once the season starts. See what it looks like tomorrow.
2) He also said that he hopes construction will begin on the Museum and neon garden sometime next week.
3) The new Doo Wop Acme opens tomorrow also. (Picture with its lights on from tonight below).
4) The Red Sky Cafe that has replaced Maureens is NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS AS OF TONIGHT (Wednesday). I passed by and it looked like they had a pretty good crowd inside despite the fact that they just finished putting up the sign this afternoon. (Picture below)!
5) I was told today by a friend that the big "Blue Olive" martini glass is going to the neon garden. Will confirm later unless one of you can confirm.
6) Mr. Chiarella sold Chiarella's Restaurant (It's now called the Dog Tooth Bar and Grille). He has purchased the old luncheonette at the southeast corner of Glenwood and Pacific avenues, is remodelling and expanding it, and will call his new restaurant "GIA'S, named after his daughter Gia Chiarella, a Margaret Mace student who passed away at 13. When it opens, I think we should all go there. It sounds like a project from the heart.
7) D'Angelis' Ristorante ("A taste of South Philly") has left North Wildwood after many years and has relocated to Pacific Avenue, a couple of doors south of Maple Avenue. They are already open for business.
8) Another 25 story condotel was approved by the Wildwood Planning Board very recently. I couldn't get to that meeting so I don't have any details yet. Details to follow in TWR.com.
9) The reason the old Martinique Club lot has been vacant for so long is because there is a 25 story condotel going there. It hasn't been introduced yet. But it will also be called THE MARTINIQUE. I saw the artists' renderings in the mayor's office today and although I don't have details yet I can tell you personally the Martinique and #8 above are even more incredible looking than the 6 that have already been approved. So if my math is correct, that makes 7 approved so far, including the smaller "Taffy Walk" and one that hasn't been introduced yet - The Martinique.
All I can say about these last two hotels is "Woweee!"
Details coming in The Wildwoods Reporter as soon as I can get to them, hopefully some of it by next week. As for the new hotels, I am in the process of trying to arrange an opportunity to get the pics.
If this isn't enough news for one day, let me know and I'll see what I can do. ;D
P.S. The Acme pic is kind of large, you might have to scroll right to see the digital sign (It doesn't show up well at night but the Acme is colored baby blue with darker highlights. Also, the sign for the Red Sky is neon but doesn't show very well in this pic.
