Thanks for sharing the pictures. The first thing I thought of when I saw the boardwalk shot is how the people are just walking along like nothing is going on. Werid. I would like to see the rest in the series too.

Going nuts searching my house here because one of the pics is missing. But I will post the rest soon. Thanks again for the interest!

I would like to see the rest in the series too. Notice how all the people are walking toward the fire, like moths to a flame; no one is walking northbound. Human nature is amazing. People want to get as close to a tragedy as they can, and then they sit there and ooh and ah about what a shame it is. Thom

I remember surfing the net for WW pics last year I came across the sad horrible pic of the childs burned body from the Mars ride accident. So very sad.. I also saw those pictures a year ago Flying. They were very disturbing...even for me.

Great pictures scca. Thank you for posting them. I love the picture that shows the back of Hitchcock Manor before it was lost to the flames. I also like the pic of the tubes of terror. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your shots.

Human nature is amazing. People want to get as close to a tragedy as they can, No one is more like this than the media. You can't watch the news today without hearing about a dozen murders, fires and auto accidents from within a 100 mile radius.

Thom[/quote] You know, on that night I had more of a feeling that the fire was just a disruption to a lot of people ("oh it's just Wildwood's yearly fire, nothing to worry about") because they had to be detoured off the boardwalk. But, a lot of the people who stayed the whole time on the beach were really feeling the loss that was taking place.

I remember that night well. I had just finished work and was walking up Central Ave. to a party ( a nightly thing back then). Had to make my way to the boardwalk to see what was going on and spent the rest of the night watching the fire from the beach. It was a sad night!

Hi scca28, wow, that was a big fire. Was that August, 1981? You rode Hitchcock Manor on the day of the fire? From what I heard, it was a very scary haunted house. There were various scenes from Alfred Hitchcock films in there like the Birds, Psycho, etc. It was built by Fred Mahana in 1978. I suppose the Morey's had no intention whatsoever to tear it down but then the fire got it. If it wasn't for the fire, it could have lasted into the later 1980's and beyond. It was nice back then how each pier was individually owned and competed with one another for business. I think the site of the Manor became the site of the pier offices? Because you can see the Cinema tent with Mariner's Landing on it to the left of the Manor on the rear. I know the Ripley's Believe It or Not! attraction was to the right of the Cinema facing front. I just wasn't sure what was to the left of the Cinema in 1982 and up. So, where Mariner's Arcade is, where was the Manor in relation to that? Just past it? Did anyone here on this site ride the Manor besides scca? Anyone remember the inside?

I was up there that night for a while...I was working the 12-8 shift at the Red Oak and went in early to see what was burning...HUGE fire! Some great photos there..there are some good ones at the Fireman Bar on Pine, too. Later that night(morning) some of the owners of some shops came in for coffee...they smelled like the fire and at least the two I talked to were pretty much in shock. They had a small shop and lost everything. Do any of yo remember the little gift shop right by the Hot Spot on the Mariners side? One of the places that never came back after the fire. I remember going in at the seasone end my first year here and buying a few 'toys' and the lady shoving all this other stuff in my bag to get rid of it(mostly dated items)
