God, these are horrible, they look at bad as the Hindenburg pictures, and I'm not saying that as a joke or to be funny, I mean it, what a catastrophe. it is just very very disturbing, such an inferno, just horrible.

I remember the tubes of terror as a kid. Talk about an unsafe ride! Sliding down a canvas tube with no protection is worst than any of these bungie jumping rides they have now.

What building was that on fire? The one with Laura's Fudge lit up and it said Fascination and Glass House on it. Isn't that location where the strip of shops, arcades, and eating spots is? When was that building built? The one on the Mariner's side. How did the fire leap over to the Manor if there was seperation between the building on fire and Mariner's? Dorney Park near me had a terrible fire Sept. 27, 1983 which destroyed the old carousel, skee-ball, and Bucket O' Blood dark ride. The Bucket O' Blood was the very first dark ride I rode. The fire just leapt from building to building. Another fire two years later destroyed the old Castle Garden roller rink/dance hall at Dorney Park. Fun Pier had two big fires in 1984, didn't they? All the dark rides were destroyed such as the Castle Frankenstein, Lost World, and Crazy House.

This last picture does remind you of the Hindenburg images: img101.imageshack.us/img101/677/fire12qw1.jpgFor Robert: All of these pics are of the same fire. It was in '81, the building was the Starlight Ballroom. At that time it housed one of the "Hot Spot" eateries at the south side, a game arcade at the north side, and some other businesses in between. For some reason I keep thinking there was an "Old Time Photo" studio in there. Anyone? The high winds that night caused the fire to make it's way over to Hitchcock Manor on Mariners. With the intensity of that fire and if the wind had been more to the west (inland) it may have had the potential to take out Dracula's Castle before the vandals could in '02.....

I remember that night well. I had just finished work and was walking up Central Ave. to a party ( a nightly thing back then). Had to make my way to the boardwalk to see what was going on and spent the rest of the night watching the fire from the beach. It was a sad night! Rosiebear, see if you can find yourself in this picture from the beach: img141.imageshack.us/img141/463/fire7bt1.jpgI can't see me or Rosiebear, but I swear I finally found Waldo. ;D Thom

The Dracula's Castle fire was very devestating to my husband and I since we so looked forward to taking our kids through it when they were old enough. Luckily we were able to take them through the boat ride under the castle before this happened. We both still miss it, it holds some fun memories for us and our friends.

I believe my Aunt's Uncle (other side of the family) owned the Starlight Ballroom at the time in burned to the ground.

Tbear, yes the Castle Dracula fire was devastating because dark rides/haunted attractions are rare so as it is. They don't build them like that anymore. For every ten dark rides we lose, we gain one new one it seems. I just got back from Niagara Falls, Canada and they have some great haunted attractions on the amusement strip, including a Haunted House, Castle Dracula and a House of Frankenstein plus a few others. Dracula dates back to the early 70's, I think it predates WW's Castle Drac by a few years, and the Frankenstein attraction dates back to the 60's. The Haunted House was built in 1980. They also have one of those Sally shoot em' up dark rides called Ghost Blasters in a newer (2002) arcade. It's like a haunted mansion theme. It's the same concept as the Den of Lost Thieves in WW. One of my other favorite spots is Ocean City, MD. They have two Bill Tracy classics from 1962, the Haunted House and Pirate's Cove plus a few others. The difference between WW and OC, MD amusements is that in OC, there are no abandoned amusement piers or parks, every park is operating, and there are different ownerships, the park with the 1962 dark ride and walk-through Pirate's Cove is owned by one owner (Trimper), and the pier and another park is owned by the same owners (Jolly Roger).

Wildwoodchic - For a whole bunch of Shore Plaza fire pictures go to the link below and click on the Shore Plaza Fire gallery. You can click each thumbnail twice for larger views. Sorry for the pricelist that comes with them but this link is the only way I can show you the fire pics without having to repost each one separately through Photobucket. - Thom www.printroom.com/pro/thewildwoodsreporter
