Yup, '60s. The ocean was still under the pier and the Skua was still next to the 'Nugget, where they belong....Nice find!

Robert, why do you keep making these out to Kristen? A PM would probably be more logical instead of making all these individual posts out to show her something.

Once again, you made me laugh, Crippled. First of all, if you have a post card or pictures, how do you go about to put them on this site? I know, I know, I'm pretty stupid.

Are you saying that there is only sand and beach under the pier now? No ocean at all?

Are you saying that there is only sand and beach under the pier now? No ocean at all? Oh these young kids.....I remember how every summer it was a longer walk from the boards to the ocean than the previous year. The beach became so much wider that they were able to put up the water parks at the end of the piers and, depending on where you were staying, it was actually better to walk to the end of the pier and cut through the w-p to get to the beach. I also remember the ski lift chair ride and Monorail on Fun Pier going out over the ocean.

yes, scca, the beach is getting wider and wider. The Cape May jettys are causing this. Pretty soon we will be able to walk to Portugal. I would like to see it about 1/2 the width, seriously. Pretty soon the guys on the fishing pier in the crest will be fishing on sand even during high tide!

Just a little nit to pick here...it's actually the Cold Spring Jetties that are causing the sand to pile up in Wildwood...oh and the Fishing Pier is all but closed now. The few members that are left really can't do much more than stare out to sea.

YOUNG KIDS? ?Thank you SO MUCH for that compliment!!!!!!!! ;D Yeh, well I've seen enough change over the years that sometimes I feel like an old timer....At least that's how I must sound to my kids when I get on my "good old days" soap box. Anyway, back to the beach, somewhere I have a pic of my son, about 15 years ago when he was 2, crouching down on the boardwalk in Ocean City NJ so he could see the water splashing up between the boards. That was our first ever visit there, and I was shocked to see the ocean coming right up to the boards in some places. It was hard to get used to after growing up with the Sahara Desert of Wildwood. Later that same season we went back to OC and actually watched them starting to build the new beach. Since then, it was chomped away by a few storms but they always came right back and replaced the sand, and now they really seem to have a hold on their beach. Maybe everyone who visits WW can fill a bucket with sand and stop off at OC on the way home to dump it there?

Great nostalgia material, Robert, thanks. Did you guys check out the "Beach Grill" underneath the pier? Nice old-school detail there... A sidelight: In case anyone thinks all the talk about overweight as perhaps the most serious health problem of the 21st century is hype--study the crowds in these images, particularly the first one. Not nearly so much excess baggage as you see on the beach today.

Between the seagulls and the blowing sand, you had to eat everything right there unless you wanted your meal with "everything" on it!!!

You know, that's a very serious problem in alot of places; the sand erosion. In South Carolina, it's really bad.
