I remember the Oceanview was the Admiral East but was the current Admiral, the Admiral West, always called that? Were they owned by the same people at one time? How about what used to be the Admiral Stevens a little further down the block? Where exactly was the "Admiral Stevens?" Was that a motel, or something else? I don't know whether or not the Admiral ever had another name... though, yes, I am fairly certain that this motel and the Admiral East (now Ocean View) were originally owned by the same people. Before the Admiral East became the Ocean View, the one across the street was called the Admiral West, I think for as long as the Admiral East existed. Before that, I believe it was just called the Admiral, as it is now.

Interesting... didn't know it was actually called Admiral "West."
Thanks for the info, Martin.

It's the way I always knew it, up until the name change. Even now, I sometimes still think of them with their Admiral East & West names. I remember there was a sign somewhere around the ground level area of the "West" Admiral for years after the change that still mentioned the "Admiral West" name. It wasn't meant to be a roadside sign and was something more for the guests. I'm not sure if it's still there, but I don't remember seeing it for a while.
Do you have any older Motel Guides, Al? Take a look - you should see listings for them.

The reason I asked if the Admiral West had another name was that I have a 1971 accomodations directory and it shows the Admiral, (Oceanview) no 'East' in its name at that point, but not the Admiral West. I know that later on when they advertised they did so as the East and West. They advertised indoor and outdoor pools, the West having the indoor pool in a flimsy plastic looking enclosure which is now gone. The floors were numbered 1-4 in the East and then continued 5-7 in the West. The owners apartment was floor 8 (stumbled in there by accident once) along with a few more motel rooms. The Admiral Stevens was a block or two further down Orchid Rd. I'm not sure how long that was there or if it was or became something else.

I'd like to see that. I know they have both Motels in the '73 Directory, with the East & West designation. Maybe the name change took place around that time?

Which would I have saved:? The original Carousel. Again, not the snazziest, but I always liked it. I loved that place too. One of the worst losses, IMO. When I saw the "Carousel By the Sea" sign outside of it in 2004, I was very surprised. Then I eventually found out it was one of MANY to be gone after the 2004 season was over...

Here is the Oceanview(Admiral East) - circa 1965. Some notes about the Admiral motels... The Admiral West pool was covered for the 1979 season The Admiral East became the Oceanview in 1992. The Admiral Stephens became the Cozy Crest Motel and Apts. www.cozycrest.com/I would definitely pick the Oceanview as one to be saved.

I think that is from around the time it opened, right? Odd (for me) to see it with 2 floors...
Thanks!

Nice postcard! Thanks. Is the pool still covered at the admiral?

Thanks for sharing the postcard, nickp!
As Martin mentioned, it certainly does look strange seeing the Oceanview (then, Admiral East, of course) with only two floors. Does anyone remember when the third floor was added?
It seems that most of those big, block-long motels in that area of the Crest started as two-story buildings, then added third floors in the late 60s or sometime in the 70s.
It's kind of neat how some, decades later, are adding fourth floors now (Cape Cod, Imperial 500, Shalimar, etc.).
Also, was there a connection between the Admiral Stevens Motel and the other two, other than the "Admiral" name? Where they owned/run by the same people, perhaps?

neat pic. And I wonder how the two babes on the diving board are looking these days?? You know what's funny, lastresort...? Eric Bard of Aladdin Color, who sometimes posts on here as DooWopStuff, might actually know who the two women in that photo are. ;D This almost certainly looks like an Aladdin postcard. Eric's father founded the business, and took photos of countless motels and other businesses in the Wildwoods (and elsewhere) over the years. In fact, he is a true "Doo Wop Hero," because, in many cases, his pics represent the best (and sometimes the only) photos we have of so many of the classic old motels. Anyway, Eric and other family members (I believe his mother and sister) were often positioned by his dad in the photos he took for these motel postcards. Eric, when he sees this, will let us know.

Interesting, thanks. But whoops, I hope I didn't insult anyone (Eric) inadvertently (calling the girls "babes" and one of them turns out to be his mom), I just figured they were random models from an agency. Eric, if you're out there, no offense intended, ok

Haha... Eric's a great guy, lastresort. I'm absolutely sure he wouldn't be offended by that, especially as something said in pure fun.

Yeah, I believe the Admiral opened in 64. My parents tell me they stayed at the Admiral in 70 and the Admiral West was just a parking lot. Then went back in 72 and the West was there. I can only assume the the Admiral Stephens was owned by the same people. Not sure. I think the West pool was uncovered in 92 when the East changed to the Oceanview. From old pictures we have back to 70 the East looks more like it does today. This pic makes it look like a completly different hotel. Cool, huh?
