Hey, guys - Sorry, but the Lurae as we knew it is now history. Here is a picture from June 12 Thom P.S. (Added after original post). Sorry to others who posted your pictures of the Lurae - I added this post before I had a chance to read the other thread - Sorry, again. I didn't mean to step on your efforts. - Thom thom@thewildwoodsreporter.comTheWildwoodsReporter.com

What is this, a demolition? More condos coming?

What is this, a demolition? Well, what does it look like, a weenie roast?! No stopping the new world order, we can only hope they play nice and throw us peons a bone every so often by proposing things like "Taffy Pull" and the $250M monstrosities that are replacing the Rio and Oceanic.

Day 2.
I am holding up, but feel an overwhelming sadness. I told my family about the Lurae - we are all beside ourselves. We all thought that this motel, "one of the nicer ones" as my mom said, would outlive the condo craze. The news is still so raw. When I am down this weekend, I am not sure if I am even going to drive by. But, I will probably be drawn to the site.

The Lurae had a huge demo sale. Sold the lamp posts, the motel furnishings, appliances everything. I know a few Motel owners who stocked up, said the mdse. was almost new and in great shape. We may see parts of the Lurae at other Motels? There really wasn't anything left but the sign, hopefully ABS laid claim to it, they have rescued many to restore?

How sad.
I spoke to the owner a few days after the condo sign first went up out in front of The Lurae. He was clearly very angry and frustrated at the time. He stated that he wanted to stay, that he wanted to put another floor on The Lurae but that the city had made that, along with a number of other operating issues, much too difficult. I was struck by the one of the last things he said to me:
If the city had let me, I would've made this a place everyone could be proud of for the next twenty years...

The truth is that no place anywhere in the U.S. is safe from the wrecking ball. The phrase "Here today, gone tomorrow" holds true for anyplace and 9 times out of 10 sadly people will take the money. In northern NJ where I live(Martin i'm sure knows this story). A beloved institution for weddings and special events called the Wayne Manor is being demoed at the end of the summer. The Wayne Manor(which opened in 1965) is in prestine shape and even though many more special events could be had the owners are selling the property and in its place will go A MERCEDES DEALER. Bottom line, money talks. At least they will not be building an Audi dealership at the site of the Lurae.

From jedi's quote the owner of the Lurae may have been an exception to this quote but sadly he is not the norm.
