For every Lurae there are 20 New Carousel and 24th street motels.

The truth is that no place anywhere in the U.S. is safe from the wrecking ball.. Very true, my friends and I remark about it all the time when walking through the city, that this is the only country in the world where we tear down buildings that are only 30 years old. But I guess fundamentally, we have to try to be positive and look at it as a sign of prosperity of a healthy nation -- we also have better health care for our animals than 90% of the countries around the world do for their people. All this being said, I have no problem with change or tearing down old boxy office buildings, but when places like the Lurae go, man, it's just wrong.

Until the day there is a Boxy Office Building Preservation League.

Hopefully people will see the writing on the wall with the lurae demo and realize there is more to lose then gain when to take down a profitable motel.

Well the Lurae sign on Surf is still standing. Almost the entire building is gone now, except a small portion towards 7th Ave. What a painful sight re

One final pic: I found this lamp post in front of the ice cream parlor that is next to the Chateau Bleu. It was painted yellow, but had telltale remnants of teal-green paint.

This is so sad.. It's sad just hearing about it, but seeing the photos is really upsetting. The truth is that no place anywhere in the U.S. is safe from the wrecking ball. The phrase "Here today, gone tomorrow" holds true for anyplace and 9 times out of 10 sadly people will take the money. In northern NJ where I live(Martin i'm sure knows this story). A beloved institution for weddings and special events called the Wayne Manor is being demoed at the end of the summer. The Wayne Manor(which opened in 1965) is in prestine shape and even though many more special events could be had the owners are selling the property and in its place will go A MERCEDES DEALER. Bottom line, money talks. At least they will not be building an Audi dealership at the site of the Lurae. Wow! I had NO idea about this. I grew up not far from there (in Butler) and had my wedding reception at the Wayne Manor. Can't believe it'll be gone soon. And for a car dealership no less...

Checked this afternoon and while more cleanup has clearly taken place since Cindy snapped those photos, the Lurae sign remains untouched. Giving me hope that someone has saved it. The Lurae lamp post is outside Dreamcicles Ice Cream Shop right next to the CB. They have a killer ice cream flavor called deer tracks...delish!

I wonder if they will use the already exsisting Lurae pool for the new condos. From the photo it does not look like its been touched.

I noticed last week, that the Lurae sign was gone. Anyone have any clue about its whereabouts? re re, I noticed this also for the first time this weekend, while cruising down Surf Ave. on Friday night. I don't have a good feeling about this, though. Given the size of the sign, storage would be difficult, though I guess it could have been broken down and kept in segments in some way. But, I fear for the worst here...

Did you happen to notice the sign that says New Construction Custom Built Townhomes? So, what is so custom built about them? Is that what is going at the site of this motel? Are townhomes and condos the same thing? Just how many motels are left in NWW? All over my area they're building more and more townhomes on what used to be empty fields.
