I don't think I ever photographed the Shore Plaza before last August. Something must have told me it was time. Good or not so good as a place to stay, I don't know, but its signage certainly contributed to the aura of the boardwalk.

Thanks Mike. And thanks for the "after" photos... I think... man, that spot looks so wrong without the Shore Plaza. Freaky. Is that the beginnings of the new Sam's at the top of the ramp?
And does anyone know why the hotel burned down in the middle of December? Such a shame...

And does anyone know why the hotel burned down in the middle of December? Such a shame... Workmen were renovating some of the rooms and the fire started in a fan or something in the ceiling of one of the rooms - A strong wind from the west forced the fire down the central corrider toward the ocean and the corrider acted like a giant wind tunnel. The fire took more than 24 hours to put out totally because the strong wind rushing through the corrider kept feeding it. Thom

That really is a beautiful picture, fuzzy.
It's funny... the whole thing with the fire/destruction of the Shore Plaza didn't really hit me until Memorial Weekend, when I walked up the ramp to the Boardwalk across from where the motel used to be at night.
The absence of the building -- just the way the rooms looked from the outside, those signature blue railings, the brick exterior at the bottom, and of course, the classic neon signs -- is really striking. It's just a gaping hole of "what used to be" now.
I love Sam's Pizza as much as the next guy, and I'm really happy to see it back... but the Shore Plaza is/was a huge loss in terms of trademark Wildwood architecture.
It is truly missed.

Like Thom said it ws a fan motor in the UV (unit venilator) in the room.. Its the hvac unit that supplies ac and heat to the room. From time to time the motors do burn up but its rare that they ever cause a fire..

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed the picture. So sad that a memory is all that's left of the place. That would certainly be a strategic spot for a nice neo-doowop motel, huh? Anyone heard of plans for the site?

I'd be shocked if we don't see some sort of hotel project emerge on this site within the next few years, perhaps sooner than later.
Not sure whether it will be a "smaller" scale (say, three-five story) building like the Shore Plaza, or if the family will opt to propose a "highrise"-type complex, but the area behind the new Sam's is large and too prime to be passed up for long.
I believe when the new Sam's was in the planning stages earier this year, there was mention somewhere of the roof being constructed in such a way that would easily allow for a building to be constructed behind and around it, with the addition of more floors directly on top being the eventual goal.
Time will tell, but I don't think it'll be long before we hear something about a potential "new" Shore Plaza in that location.

Am I the only one that finds the new Sam's building drab and depressing? The plain gray exterior and minimal decor is definitely out of place on the bright and colorful boardwalk.
