One mystery down, but another one arises.
I'm trying to figure out exactly which motel the photo from fuzzyscorpio's avatar comes/came from.
Obviously, those style of signs were very prevelant, and can still be seen at motels all over the island.
If I had to hazard a guess on this one, I'd say it came from the Seakist, though that's nothing more than a shot in the dark, really.
Was I at least close, Kathi?

Al, That stand on the boardwalk where Sand Jamm now stands was a water balloon race game.

Nice pic Al! Did anyone else ever notice that the sign for the Suitcase Motel looks as though the people are:
a.) being eaten by the suitcase b.) not wearing any clothes
LOL just something that I must note everytime I drive by that place

Thanks, bro! And, that's a great pic of the Sans Souci (a motel and sign I miss very much as well). I wish I would have photographed the Sans Souci more than I did... for some reason, I only have a few pics of that and the Donaraille... that area looks really weird without them now... As for the Suitcase sign, it definitely does appear as if they are being eaten, but they are much too happy about it and accepting of their fate. And, yes, the guy is definitely naked. Here's a slightly larger version of the pic: The only neon portion is at the very top (the outline of the suitcase itself), but this is one of the few signs in the Wildwoods that probably looks better during the day, when you can make out the features of the couple. A true classic that I always look for on my way into town as well!

[edit] P.S. --here's another shot from the same night with a sideways view of the sign...

Al, That stand on the boardwalk where Sand Jamm now stands was a water balloon race game. I don't think it was a balloon race game, I think it was just a water gun game. No ballons involved. I could be wrong,

Al, I recognized that building because I always despised it. After all, it more or less took the place of the Flyer.
Where is that sign? How have I missed a naked couple in a suitcase all these years?

Al, I recognized that building because I always despised it. After all, it more or less took the place of the Flyer. Where is that sign? How have I missed a naked couple in a suitcase all these years? Rob, was the structure in question built as part of the facade of the "New" Hunt's Pier in 1990? If so, then it actually survived for quite a while (15 years) in its own right. Not that it was anything special, of course. But an interesting footnote, regardless. ************** The Suitcase Motel is a real classic in North Wildwood, located, I believe, on the southwest corner of 15th & New Jersey Aves. It's a very well kept little place, and is actually open year round, believe it or not. (I always thought that was odd, as there doesn't appear to be much in that are during the dead of winter... but they must do OK.) Here's a link to their website: suitcasemotelandtravel.com/And here's a better view of the classic sign: www.roadsidenut.com/suit204.jpg

Yeah, I suppose that building did last about 15 years, which is saying something. Still, it was a relic from a time when something went horribly wrong, so seeing it replaced with something else (and something nicer) seems good to me.
I have to check that place out next time I'm in Wildwood- looks like a nice little motel. Gotta love softcore porn on the sign!

Very good call, Rob. I haven't cataloged half of the pictures I took last year, but I knew I had a slew of shots from this area of the Boardwalk to look through. Eventually, I came across the pic below (under Kathi's), which pinpoints the location of the gamestand reflection in question. You were right, it was one of the small, freestanding structures on the north side of Hunt's Pier. This one stood in the exact spot where the entrance to the new Sand Jamm store is now. Not exactly sure what the game was, obviously some sort of race competition. I'll have to try to dig up another photo of this while it was actually in operation. The pic below was taken in late September '05, on a weekday. How the heck did I miss this post originally? Then again, I *am* the same person who didn't even notice a quite intriguing feature of my own photograph. I was already impressed that you picked up on that, Al, but now you're officially starting to scare me... . You must have been doing some very thorough documentary work with your camera last year. Thanks for presenting and solving (with Rob's help of course) this entertaining little puzzle. So the Hunt's game stand was torn down after the '05 season, according to what you wrote? Everyone else has been talking about it in the past tense too. I guess I'm really not going to recognize that part of the boardwalk this year...

I remember the game stands. There were four of them across the pier and there were once three triangle shaped roofs over the building. I suppose those buildings with the three triangles were built after the Flyer was torn down. But, before there was a hot dog/frozen yogurt/milk shakes stand in front of the Flyer along the walk and next to it a stand called Super Payoff Shack #2. On the other side, south front corner there was some sort of game stand. I'm not sure the year the pic was taken, it's in the WW book. But, you can see Morey's Pier in the background with the loop ride, the back of Dante's when it faced the other way, and the Jumbo Jet. So I woud estimate it to have been between 1981-1984.
