Rob, you’re definitely not the only one who has voiced this opinion. There was an entire post on this just a week or so ago… I think it might have been in Mike C.’s (crazyaboutwildwood) most recent photo thread.
While I completely agree that the current look of Sam’s is quite “drab” and out of place, I think you we have to give it some leeway at this time. The main goal was just to get the parlor back up and running again this year, and they’ve done an excellent job with that.
Hopefully, the look of the building will be improved upon next year and beyond…

Al - I hadn't heard the rumors about the new Sam's tying in with a possible new hotel. That would be great. That seems like the only way another hotel can get built, building on top of Sam's and on the back parking lot. There's just not enough room behind Sam's for a "modern" hotel with larger accomodations. Maybe they could buy out a couple of the houses behind the old hotel, that would give them more room, although the block from Juniper to 26th isn't very wide - it might be one of the most narrow city blocks in town. Anyway, maybe Sam's was left "Drab Grey" as a temporary measure so they could eventually incorporate its design into a bigger hotel. That would be cool too... Thom

I'm sure the #1 priority for Sam's was getting up and running for the 2006 season, I'm just hoping they have plans to make their building a little more interesting in years to come. Of course, I'm not really a Sam's fan... I'm more of a Mack's kinda guy. Should I duck and run for cover?

Thom Thom, I'm going to try and dig up the article that I read that info in. I specifically remember something being written about the possiblity of a "new" Shore Plaza being built on the site, with a specific reference to the way the new Sam's roof was being constructed. I think this might have been in the Leader, but now I'm not certain. I'll try my best to find it, though. It is an exciting possibility, either way.

One thing I've always said about Mack's is that you can't beat their signage. It's big, bold, screams "WILDWOOD!" at you, and... is truly vintage (both locations -- Wildwood Ave. & Roberts Ave.). I would love to see Sam's try to incorporate some signage, some neon maybe, as one way to spruce things up a bit.

Im sure Rob is right about Sams highest priority was to be up and running by this season.. The architech (sp) took this into consideration and thus I think this is why it looks so drab. Fast was the reason...

Yes, I'm completely anal about such things, but once I get something in my head, I just have to figure it out... so please bear with me here... OK, in Kathi's picture, below the sign, what appears to be some sort of game prize booth appears in the reflection on the glass. I'm trying to place exactly what is being reflected here, but I'm having some trouble with it. I don't think it would be Gateway 26 or any of the booths in front of Morey's, considering the angle (I am correct that this is/was the south side of the Shore Plaza being shown in the picture, right?). And I don't believe there are any gaming booths on the old Ocean Theatre block, are there? Could this be something located at the time on the base of Hunt's Pier...? I'm sure there's a very easy explaination, but this one really has me stumped for some reason... any ideas?

Al - That definitely IS the Juniper Avenue side of Shore Plaza and I believe the refelection in the lobby windows is the Ocean Theater block. But I can't figure how the windows would reflect the Hunts property from that angle. It wouldn't be reflecting from the pier because when Hunts was still open the NE corner of the pier had the Flyer, in front of which were one or two games. But since the reflection is the Ocean Theater block, It can't be reflecting from the front of the building, the laws of physics would only permit reflection from the Juniper Avenue side of Hunts. Wouldn't they? I looked at it closer again. My L.T. memory is so fuzzy, it takes me a while: I don't know how old that picture is, but I think the reflection is from a game arcade that stood on the NW corner of the block at that location where Route 66 Pizza is now. I worked on the pier till about 86 when I got out of college and I seem to remember that arcade being there. We used to go in there to get change. Thom

This is developing into quite the little mystery, huh Thom?
According to Kathi's original post in this thread, the picture in question was taken last August. So, whatever is being reflected in the glass there is either still there, or was there in 2005.
I think I remember the arcade you spoke of that was in the current location of the Route 66 restaurant. I believe it was called Ocean Center.
If I'm not mistaken, Route 66 opened in 2004. I *think* prior to that, it was the Bella Villa restaurant/pizza shop for a number of years.

Could that be a ballon/clown watergun game? If you reverse the pic, it looks like it says " winner every <something>, prize every <something>.

That photo is only a few years old because the Shore Plaza sign had been refurbished. Forget about 1986 or 1991! Hunts had a game stand that was torn down to make room for the larger Sand Jamm/Coffee House, it was probably that. Or it could be a reflection of the reflection in Rte. 66 coming from middle of Morey's but that is a stretch. That is a weirdly angled corner

My shot was absolutely, positively taken in August of 2005, and it is a view of the south face of the motel as Al said.
Funny, I never even noticed that reflection. I'm pretty sure it's something directly across Juniper Ave from the motel. I think I remember a little arcade with windows that wrapped around the corner from the boardwalk side. Based on where I was standing when I took the photo, I don't see how it could be a reflection of anything up at the boardwalk level. I believe it would have had to be something facing north, not east or west.
