I know I've been away awhile and I probably won't even know the place if I ever get back there. Same as when I was away from Ocean City, Maryland for awhile. When I went back I couldn't believe the huge, tall condos built along the main strip.

Marie, there's also the actual "Doo Wop Diner" on the boardwalk. The one and only, as far as I know... I think re's exasperation got the better of her while she was writing that post--it's not like you to scramble things up, re. What was Ernie's is now the Pink Cadillac Diner. I'd trade either of 'em, matter of fact I'd trade both of 'em for a healthy Wildwood Diner, as I imagine most of us would. The gist of Robert's comments seems to me correct, even if he's got some outdated details going there, and even if not all of the changes he laments can be laid at the feet of rapacious developers. Far as I can recall, none of the places lost to "acts of God" (let's hope they were) has ever been replaced by anything that even approached the qualities of the original, Zaberer's being an obvious example. The Wildwoods are in, to use Thom's polite expression, "a transition phase"... You'd still know the place if you returned today Nance, but the differences would be very striking and probably more than a little sad to you.

Ed Zaberer's (how many of you miss that one and were upset when it closed and burned?) I'm embarrassed to say that as many years as we enjoyed Zaberer's, I can't remember for the life of me exactly where it was now. Was it where the Sunset Bay restaurant, etc. currently stands? Captain's Table -- nothing yet, condos to come (there's a sales office across the street) Schumann's/Hudson's--condos Surfside--expansion of the Water's Edge motel Duffinetti's--?? a relatively recent demolition (last winter some time), and the question of what replaced it has been asked repeatedly but I don't think anyone's gotten around to answering it... Uncle Lou's--can't remember... is the ground floor still there and in use for something? Can anybody fill in the blanks here?

Sunset Bay is on the Zaberer's site and I hear they are expanding west and build ing their own boardwalk w/shops. If tha's true, it will be even a better palce. Always enjoy going there, but always pick the hottest days and really can't enjoy it bcause of the heat and strong sun. Good music!

I don't think there's anything on the Duffinetti's site, but I wouldn't swear to it.

new fakey stuff, with overpriced food I never tried it... Neither have I, but it looks fakey and it seems overpriced. Nice effort though, I suppose

To all of the member of the Doo Wop Preservation League I am willing to meet with you at an upcoming meeting to discuss the two letter I had published regarding the Wildwood Diner. I have read your comments and I feel that my letters did not communicate the entire feelings behind the purpose of these letters. I too was unaware that the diner was going to be torn down until I received numerous calls regarding the demolition equipment at the site. I understood that the diner was going to be moved, re furbished and used as a diner off shore in Middle Township. I certainly would have taken a more aggressive approach to save the diner had I known earlier that it would be torn down. Regarding the response about my family selling taking the profits and leaving. This person does not know my family's history in the Wildwoods. My family owned the property for 41 years. We operated it in good times and bad. My parents were aging and the diner became too much for them to handle. When it was sold there was no profit. As an outsider to your organization, I feel that the emphasis on saving the Surfside and not the Wildwood Diner was a major error. I admit, I don't know what your organization tried to do to save the Wildwood Diner. However, Trudy's article in the Press discussing the project to disassemble transport, store, restore and transport back and reassemble the Surfside clearly shows that where there is a will there is a way. I just don't feel that the same effort was made to save the Wildwood Diner, a truly historic Wildwood landmark. Again, I thank you for your discussion and criticism of my two letters. I would be happy to meet with your organization to discuss this further. Thank you!
Joe Scrocca Jr.

Hi Joe, I'm glad you've come to talk to us directly about your views. Of course, not all of us here are DWPL members (including me)--some of us just take advantage of this message board to hang out and reminisce, complain, grieve, speculate, report rumors, etcetera. I don't know when the League has its meetings; hopefully someone will post or contact you about that. I just wanted to welcome you and say that, for what little it's worth, you have my utmost sympathy for what must have been the excruciating experience of seeing your family's legacy reduced to rubble. Common sense would seem to suggest that after 41 years of good stewardship, your parents were simply doing what they had to do in making the decision to sell the Wildwood Diner; I only wish (as I'm sure you do!) that its buyers had held up their end of the bargain... but considering the brute force of recent economic trends, I guess the outcome might well have been the same even if they had taken better care of the diner. I too was unaware that the diner was going to be torn down until I received numerous calls regarding the demolition equipment at the site. I understood that the diner was going to be moved, re furbished and used as a diner off shore in Middle Township. That's about what I figured. The Wildwood Diner can never be replaced, but there are other precious jewels of doo-wop that are or will soon be endangered. I hope you'll keep in touch with us and perhaps lend a hand, in memory of the diner, when the opportunity arises to save one of those jewels from a similar fate.
