I read this board frequently, but rarely post, and would bet money that Robert has Asperger's Syndrome (a mild variant of autism marked by impaired social interactions and a fixation on a narrow area of interest - DARK RIDES in Robert's case!- , among other things).

Is there a "cure"?

Sadly, no. I have a nephew with Asperger's and have also had students with it. I hadn't thought about Robert having it, though it sounds about right.

What does your nephew "fixate" on?

Hey, I always thought Robert just loved his rides.

Ok, hulk, to satisfy your curiosity, I haven't been to Wildwood since 2002; why, did you want to know? I also enjoy reading everyone's posts and Robert reminds me ALOT like my older son.

People with Asperger's have average to above average intelligence and often have excellent language skills. They just don't relate socially or emotionally and prefer to focus on their subject of high-interest. Of course I don't know Robert, but I thought a little insight might explain some of the obsessive, one-track posts he sometimes gets razzed for. (And also why he doesn't have a job, Crippled! )

What does your nephew "fixate" on? Well, it can be different things. As he is going to be 7 years old, it is food, sitting in a certain seat in the car, etc. To respond to Flyin, they almost always have average to above average intelligence, as was stated. My nephew has been placed in the "gifted class", to which, according to different school districts, a child must score a certain IQ. Their verbal skills are quite good. When you are trying to have a discussion with a child who has Asperger's, you get the feeling you are talking at them instead of with them.

I always thought Robert had OCD. And Laura...I DO think Robert has the intelligence to get a job somewhere. Let's face it, McDonald's and WalMart hire just about anyone.

Hey, pam, seriously, maybe that's what was wrong with my son all these years! He graduated on the honor roll but when you hold a conversation with him, it's like he's not really listening; yet he's very very smart when it comes to talking about something he's really really interested in. When it comes to employment, though, his concentration is not the best and he has alot of difficulty with the job at hand. What really hurts is that he has had many "smart-alec" guys he's worked with call him stupid and make fun of him, because sometimes it takes him awhile to understand something.

Maybe we should make a new thread on this.

Nance, did you ever ride the Castle Dracula or Golden Nugget? I was lucky enough to ride them several times. The whole block where the Castle/Nickels Midway was must look weird with the two theaters gone, too. 2002 was the start of the demolition boom, if you went back now there are certain areas you won't recognize now because whole blocks of motels were wiped out for condos. And several restaurants closed their doors and were demolished. A new Acme, new restaurants, and so on. Piers are pretty much the same, I heard the Condor was going as well as the Slide and the Nugget may be next on the chopping block. Morey's put up an awful lot of rides for sale which are listed on Anthony's site.
