Has any structure on the island ever been demolished via dynamite? Al - I'm 55 and I don't know of any blown up intentially. I think there may have been a couple of gas explosions over the years, but not dynamite. To the poster that asked about any empty lots still down there. Not counting the two empty lots on Ocean Avenue (One of which is set to become a fitness park in Oct.), I believe there is one empty city block left on Atlantic Avenue south of Farragut, although I couldn't tell you off the top of my head which city block it is. About the demo of the Grande - About time! But I have to believe, don't get your hopes up for it happening too close to Labor Day. First, the blast still hasn't been approved by the government to the best of my knowledge. So far, it just sounds like Mita talking off the cuff without the necessary approvals. I don't think he can just do it on his own. Second, if they do blast it to smithereens - I hope - they will first have to evacuate Seapoint, etc. Although modern blast demolition is a pretty scientific process, how will they control the dust cloud? Can you see all those tourists and condo owners at Seapoint being told to get out of their properties because they're about to be engulfed by a giant sand storm, not to mention having to power wash their properties afterward? ;D My guess is that if they do blast, they would probably have to do it closer to October - Thom

Thom, not to mention the problems it may cause the migrating patterns of all those birds!

www.belldonscoastalcolors.com<rant>Yeah, it's okay aesthetically... and it ought to be. The single family homes in this complex are priced between $1.65 and $3.2 million. I guess the condos are all sold; I don't remember what they went for. But this is a very high-end project. God forbid every developer down there were to aim for the microscopic population segment that can handle a price tag like that--in many if not most cases, for a second home. I don't know much about what Wildwood was like in the early 20th century; maybe it was more like the Hamptons then. I would hate to see it go in that direction in the 21st. It ought to carry forward the postwar theme that is encapsulated in doo-wop style--the belief that a comfortable, happy life was within the reach of every decent and hard-working American.</rant>

Thom, would that last empty block not be the former site of the Captain's Table across from the Granada? Between Topeka and Hollywood I believe? Or is there already something under construction there?

This thing would have to be planned for the off season when the 2 motels between the Grand(regal plaza, pier 6600) are closed otherwise some patrons may get dusty.
As for the Grand i agree with most of you, this place was a dump when it was opened and will look much better when its a pile of rubble.

Thom, not to mention the problems it may cause the migrating patterns of all those birds! Marie, I hadn't thought about all those stoopid migratory birds. Maybe if the blast knocks them out of the sky first, we won't have to worry about them crashing into all those giant buildings. Seriously, everybody come to the big DEP meeting next Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Wildwood City Hall to support our right to choose our own future. Support the Starlight Resort and all the other highrises or we will never get back enough of the hotel rooms we need. Thom

I remember when Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk had a problem building a drop tower like AtmosFEAR because of the "migratory birds" issue.

It is definitely at Hollywood and Atlantic and as of today the developer has put up fencing, etc, for the beginning of construction - The new condo project is going to be called the "Ocean Villa." Thanks for checking that out, Thom.
I am looking forward with very mixed emotions to my first ride down Atlantic Avenue this season. Already in '05, that wonderfully cheery, good-time, welcoming atmosphere in the Crest that I grew up with (and enjoyed for many adult years) seemed on its way to oblivion, and by now I guess "condomination" will be even more painfully apparent...

Yeah it is, although the change isn't as dramatic as it has been the past few years. Then again, maybe I'm just getting used to it?

I can now say that by destroying such a classic piece of american arcitecture such as the the Grand the crest is beyond saving. The horror of it all.
p.s. Please don't take this post seriously, as far as i'm concerned this dump can't come down fast enough ;D ;D
