... Wonderful, fun lettering--it is very late '60s/early '70s as Mike said, I would put it more toward the '70s (should we establish a category called "late doo-wop"?)--but the condition of the sign sends the wrong message at this point. I agree, it could use a new rendition with more pizzazz. Make it bigger... what the hell... stick it on the roof, even

Martin... (or anyone else for that matter)... do you happen to have any photos of the original Golden Nugget? I had heard that the Beach Colony was originally the Golden Nugget but have never been able to come across a photo...
I believe the building might actually date to the '50s as one of the older original motels, so its interesting that we actually recognize it today for its distinctly '60s/'70s look rather than whatever its original look was...

What was the Golden Nugget? Was it western themed like the ride? Mike, you're from New York, too? Did you ever get a chance to ride their "Dante's Inferno" at Coney Island? It actually looked more gruesome than the Morey's one. Are there only two Dante's models like that? Also Coney had a Hell Hole, too just like Sportland Pier had. I believe Coney's is gone, too. Morey's did a great job remodeling Dante's, now let's see them restore the Nugget and somehow Sportland to restore Dr. Blood's too. If that would happen then the north end would be dark ride heaven! WW could use an extra operating dark ride or two to give more variety and to make up for the losses like on Hunt's, Castle Drac, etc.

I have a bunch of old pictures that look to be from the early 60's by the look of the cars. Will try and scan a few for next week.

You know Doo Wop Mike D your right, getting rid of the orange would be a bad move. Now that I think about it the colors are what really sets that motel apart from the others. It also is the only thing that really is colorful in the immediate area now.
I didn't really notice if the signs on the railings were gone. It's to bad they are, they were a great touch.
You can't beat the lettering on their sign. It's just a shame it's not neon. Man would that jump out achya. ;D

I have a '73 Motel Guide with a picture of the Golden Nugget, Mike. I don't have a scanner. I see Eric said he would try to post a few - the picture in my book must have been taken by his father. When "beachrat" gets to the G's in the scans of her '75 Motel Guide, we'll see if the Golden Nugget is still listed - I don't see an ad for the Beach Colony, but that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't change by then - maybe they just didn't have a full page listing in the book. I'm going to give away one of the ideas I had for the place, if I had bought it - I would have changed the name to the Golden Beach, combining the original and the current name. It also seems more inviting to me...

Considering the Bonanza was across the street maybe that of wwc was looking for a western theme since the bc was originally the golden nugget.

The Swan was behind the Beach Colony? I didn't know that, I thought it was further down in the crest, near the silver beach.

The Swan was behind the Beach Colony? I didn't know that, I thought it was further down in the crest, near the silver beach. Well, you're only talking about maybe four blocks' difference there. I, too, always have been foggy about where the Swan was--we never were ambitious enough to walk that far up the beach from the Atlantis Lodge/Internationale and certainly not from the Reges--but I sure did notice that lovely "Swan" sign, with the script as graceful as its namesake, every time we drove up or down Atlantic ... I do hope that sign was saved, I think someone said it was?... I'm looking at the one and only Wildwood accommodations directory that I have, from 1998, which says that the Beach Colony is #500 and the Swan was #510 on East Stockton. RIP <sigh...>

I think the Swan's sign is supposed to go in the Neon Garden by the resurrected Surf-Side.

I think the Swan's sign is supposed to go in the Neon Garden by the resurrected Surf-Side. Thanks, Martin, I sure hope so... The rendering of the neon garden on the DWPL home page shows it (I put a view of the rendering below), but I've been told that artwork was done a long time ago when a lot of the details about the neon garden were pretty tentative.

I have a picture of the area before all the demolition. The Astronaut is in the front of the block to the left (if your facing the ocean) The Swan is across the street to the right. The Bonanza is behind the Astronaut, and the Beach Colony is behind the Swan.

Looks like that angled detail on the second floor is original. They also had the same design in the lobby counter.
