Even with this collapse however, the Yankees are still the most storied franchise in all of sports.

Okay, I am allowed to respond to this!! The Tigers surprised everyone in the state of Michigan this year. It was an incredible and enjoyable baseball season to watch. The end of the regular season was hard with their losing streak, but the boys stepped it up to a new level in the playoffs. I will admit, I was really nervous about the Tigers playing the Yankees with the unbelievable and talented lineup, but they played hard as a team and won!!!
It was a blast watching them celebrate with the fans after the game! My kids were cracking up because I was jumping up and down in the living room yelling "The Tigers beat the Yankees!"
As much as this state is excited about their Detroit Tigers, we still have our Lions to keep us grounded!!!!!!!
Now it is on to Oakland. Hopefully we will get past the A's. I would love to see a 1968 / 2006 reunion of the Cardinals vs Tigers.
GO TIGERS!!!! JACKIE Michigan Girl

All I have to say is "Joe must go" I’ve got the solution to all the Yankees’ problems. Don’t worry about firing Torre, just do this: A-Rod for Pat Burrell. ;D

Good idea Al, but here's the math: Burrell = $17m A Rod = $25m
Phillies would nvr increase salary while "unloading" $17M for 07 (and $18M for 08) Ed Wade screwed this team 4 yrs to come with ultra-high, no trade contracts.

It really is nothing more than wishful thinking. What it really comes down to is how desperate the Yankees are to get rid of A-Rod. Steinbrenner might be willing to swallow some salary in such a case.
I still don't think they would want any part of Burrell, but you never know. Pat's nowhere close to being in A-Rod's league even on Rodriguez's worst day. I can dream though.
The bottom line is, A-Rod has got to get out of New York, and the Phillies could certainly use him at third. Though I totally agree that Ed Wade handcuffed this team with huge contracts to players like Burrell, Lieberthal and Wolf, relief is now in sight.
Lieberthal and Wolf's contracts have expired, David Bell and Bobby Abreau are now off the books, etc. I trust Gillick to make the right moves, and he has traditionally proven to be a guy who works via trade rather than free agency.
We shall see... but, it could be an interesting offseason...

He HAS loaded up with pitching in the minors. The one lefty they acquired from NYY pitched very well in relief at the major level. The tall SS they also got in the deal might be converted to a 3rd baseman. He was NYY #1 selection in the '05 draft and has great upside. I think, if Gavin Floyd can live up to his early predictions, the staff will age well and be fairly deep. Then LF is a prob. Maybe Burrell can fill seats in Reading and we can try someone there, as long as we are getting pitching and adaquate 3 base play. I have gone thru too many "Hot Stove Leagues" w/the Phillies to get my adrenelin up in October. See 'ya in Clearwater!

The problem with the Yankees is they are not a team, they are a bunch of individuals.

Reminds me of something Dallas Green said when he took over a Mets team in the mid 80's. He called them "A Rotisserrie Team". I guess you could say the same for the Yankees. The Phillies were somthing like that when they had Abreau and Bell and Burrell. Players that can give you (hollow) numbers but not wins or excitement.

People often make the case that baseball is not neccesarily a "team" sport, that the success of a unit actually depends upon the individual performances of certain players, not the unit as a whole.
While there are certainly times when one hot player can help carry a team a bit, I think it's safe to say that this theory has been down more times than anyone would care to count.

One thing I'm tired of is the 6 page specials in all the papers about the Yankees. Get over it, you lost, you don't deserve to advance, stop crying about unfair calls by the umps, stop making excuses on why you were done wrong, stop acting like without the Yankees the playoffs are pointless.
The Mets who actually have somthing to show have become the far-second story in New York, and these Yankee articles have been taking priority over the future games that actually matter in the baseball world. Hopefully that stops tommorow. Iv'e never seen a team, or fans whine so much when they lost. Except it and hope for a better next year. That's what Ive done with the Mets for years. No need for lousy excuses.
Just my three cents.
