its at least 20 years old.. Im guessing more then 25 years.. The next question would be what was on the lot before the HR? Or was it just an empty lot? The lot that the Hawiian Rumble is located on now (on Surf Ave., between 24th & 25th) was formerly occupied by what was perhaps the grandest of the stately old hotels that dotted the Wildwoods' landscape before the motel boom -- the Manor Hotel (way, waaaaay back, I believe it was called the Musher Hotel). The Manor featured a ton of amendnities, a renowed restaurant, tons of live entertainment featuring some of the most famous acts of the day, and much more. Now, I know that the Manor was ultimately destroyed by fire (surprise, surprise), but I'm unsure of the exact timeframe on that. I hear many often refer to the "Manor Bar" as a famous hangout some time ago, but I don't know if that was a bar connected to the original hotel building, or, perhaps, a standalone structure that came after the fire. I have also heard something about the Hawaiian Rumble complex being the remainder of the former Manor structure, and not a new building that was erected just for the current entity. If anyone has any further info on this, I would love to hear all about it. But, at least to somewhat answer your question, Hulk, the HR site is best known as the former location of the Manor Hotel. That much I know.

Sure thing, Hulk... I have a bunch of old postcards of this place, but this is the only one I've scanned thus far. I'll try to post a few more soon. Just imagine this place standing where the Hawaiian Rumble is now. It must have been a true loss when it was destroyed. Another example of how often rampant change has swept through the Wildwoods, and how treasured classics so often come and go.

That is quite a place! It actually looks modern even by today's standardcs. No disrespect towards the HR but looking at this place across the street from the 24th street must have been really neat. I'm guessing this place did not have a pool, I know many of the old hotels did not.

I did happen to see a really fascinating aerial shot of Hunt's Pier taken in 1967 on my last visit to the Boyer Museum. At the top of the photo, you can clearly see the Manor standing proud. My dad got out of the Navy in '69, and doesn't seem to have any memory of the Manor from the early 70s.

I really have to dig up some of the photo postcards I have of the Manor, Hulk, because the rendering above doesn't do it justice. My grandparents told me stories about staying at the 24th Street Motel and Thunderbird, and the views of the Manor from right across the street. They would often spend the day at the beach, then hit the Manor's "Supper Club" at night, where they'd catch crooners like Tony Bennett in his prime! I don't believe that the Manor had a pool, so I guess that was one drawback. Like you mentioned, most of the old hotels were lacking in that department.

The way the Manor must have looked surrounded by the "new" motels like the Packard and 24th is probably similar to the look that the still standing motels have now surrounded by all the condos. In 50 years or so something else will pop up and make those condos look strange.
It all goes in cycles.

If you want to give your last goodbyes to our Hawaiian Rumble - Saturday Sept 23 is the auction - I contacted the auction person and they sent me a list of what will be for sale. They are selling everything including the trash cans. I will be there, maybe pick up a memory or two. It will be a sad day. Last chance to take pics inside!!

Al - The Manor Hotel - or the Manor Supper Club - was one truly special place, although I never had the chance to go there since I was too young. To the best of my knowledge, nothing from the original Manor was incorporated into the HR. One just replaced the other. You're right about the greats that played there. I think the Manor Supper Club was the main HQ for Jerry Lewis when he came to town, although I also seem to remember him headlining at the Bolero (without Dean). Thom

The last pancakes were served Labor Day. Golf & ice cream are still open. Look for a hotel to be built instead of condos if anything is built. And why not name it The Manor.
