Meant to say that it was excellent. I hadn't been there in two or three years. It was better than I remembered, and as Hulk said it's somewhat reminiscent of Mack's. In fact, comparing Monday's product at Pizza Town with Mack's from a couple of weeks ago, I'd have to say Pizza Town was the clear winner. Crust at least as good, less oily, not so intensely salty, and very flavorful. Do try it, everyone, if you happen to be traveling Route 46 one day (westbound side at Elmwood Park). Tip: Turn in at the second driveway because you have about a 50% chance of getting rear-ended trying to turn in at the first one Glad you liked it. It's really great stuff. Try Lodi Pizza a little south of there as well. Thanks Martin, lately I've been thinking of going there, so your recommendation is timely. Apparently Lodi Pizza was included on some kind of "Top 10 Pizza Joints" list that my dad and his companion have been working their way through. Dad said their pizza was "a little greasy," but he's been perfecting his own pizza for years, so it's almost impossible to get a top rating from him ... You're a lucky guy to be living so close to both Pizza Town and Lodi!

Still made their Top 10, so...
Like any of these places, some days are going to have better pizza then others. Even Mack's - I had two slices there last May that were some of the best pizza I've ever had from anywhere. Then I had a couple of slices a few weeks ago that were quite good, but not nearly like those from May.

Hey, NE Philly folks - How about Pizza City in Academy Plaza? I think their "secret" ingredient is pepper. That pizza has been excellent for the past 20+ years. Hey neighbor! I know this is not "traditional pizza", but I am hooked on the Mediterranean pizza @ John's New Pizza on Megargee St just off 8700 Frankford. Feta, mozzarella, spinach, tomatoes, olive oil & garlic. mmmmmm

Still made their Top 10, so... Well, the top 10 wasn't Dad's invention, it was something he or his friend came across in a magazine, I think--maybe NJ mag? Very true, but in a good shop it should be pretty consistent. Sounds like you might have had your substandard Mack's around the same time I did in mid-August. On two successive nights it was disappointing. Maybe they're having an "off" year with some less-than-stellar pizza chefs and servers. I wonder if all the fuss over the new Sam's has knocked them off their game... In NYC, Mimi's on Lexington Ave around 83rd used to be a reliable pizza shop but I haven't been there for a few years. Trying not to eat too much pizza these days, having reached the age when there is no margin for dietary error ;D

Lodi Pizza is a good place and on a Friday night they crank out a ton of pies. As I said earlier, Pizza Town USA is good also.

Having consistent pizza is very very hard. Its not always the pizza maker although if they suck then so will your pizza but there is alot of other factors. 1st, The cheese sometimes is not always consistent. Sometimes it has a nice bite and other times its bland. It all depends on its aging process. The manufacturers will pump it out faster if the demand is higher! Same thing with the sauce and tomatoes. Also, The dough can be tricky especially on very humid days or very cold days. Believe it or not but the barometer outside has alot to do with the way your pizza cooks in your oven and how they are vented etc etc etc. I could go on forever but thats it for now. I think macks has been very consitent over the years. More then Sams.

mike, is it true that was told to me ... That all pizza restaurants *have* to buy from a certain cheese and sauce supplier?? Umm ya know... Unless you want ... ahem.. something to happen to you place.. That kind of fizzled out by the 70s. Back in the 50s and 60s these kind of things were very true. In todays times there is still some companys that will float you some money or equipment in return that you buy all your food from them. I wont mention any names but even today a large food company will put a whole store together for you and could spend up to one hundred thousand or more but you better be greatful and purchase all of your products from them out of respect for helping you! ( plus you got to pay them back the money) Back in the day, A place here in town got blown up and leveled to the ground 2 times in 2 seperate locations. I cant really say anymore about it, but I think you know where Im coming from.

What is your favorite type of fried dough? Funnel Cakes or Zeppoles?
